This trunked radio network uses infrastructure mostly sited adjacent to railway tracks and on railway property, providing communications between Metrol and drivers, together with a trunked radio telephone facility where the radio terminal may be used to interconnect to the public switched telephone network.

New 25 metre high radio towers and telecommunications infrastructure is being installed adjacent to many railway lines to cater for the introduction of a Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) , due for completion in early 2012. The project cost is reported to be in the order of $150 million dollars plus, however these upgraded facilities will allow for the expansion of voice and data services to enhance rail transport public safety communications together with an ability to provide timely passenger information messages, similar to customer broadcast facilities in operation across the Yarra Tram network.

For more information on the rail network you can find information on the VicTrack or Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) websites.
